Marans are a must for those of us chasing a rainbow basket, and what better variety than our favorite wheaten color. Wheaten Marans were on our wish list for a long time and we were excited to finally acquire them. Heading into our second year with this breed in 2025, we love them both as a pure flock and also in crosses for the variety they bring in feather patterns and egg colors.

    Marans are a straight combed, larger bird with feathered legs. Wheaten is one of the more rare varieties of this bird. They are very calm, friendly birds that do well in a mixed flock. This makes then fun for the backyard chicken keeper.

    We find our Wheatens to be excellent layers, producing around 200 large eggs per year. Eggs are a rich reddish brown with a range of darker speckles.
