Swedish Flower Hens

Anyone who knows me, knows I can happily chat Swedish Flowers all day long…I absolutely love these birds! We were drawn to this breed by their beauty and quickly fell in love with their amazing personalities and history.

This is a landrace breed from Sweden, meaning that they evolved through natural selection. While they were once common in farmyards, with the introduction of high production breeds to Sweden in the late 19th century, fewer and fewer farmers kept SFH. They were considered extinct until 3 unrelated flocks were found in the late 1980’s, then added to the Swedish genebank and a preservation project was started. SFH were first imported to North America by Greenfire Farms in 2010 with other lines imported by Greenfire at a later date.

SFH are good foragers and predator savvy. Hens lay a good number of cream colored eggs. They aren’t often broody, but when they are will make excellent mamas, who will easily raise chicks with the help of the rest of the flock. Roosters are good protectors yet gentle and kind to their hens and are friendly and not aggressive to their humans.

They are a beautiful, friendly, and very social bird…running over to greet us at the gate, riding on our shoulder and following us around the yard.

SFH are gorgeous birds. Their range of color and flowering is amazing (their name literally means “bloom hen”) and no two are exactly the same. We select birds with a lot of consistent flowering for our breeding flock.

Preserving the natural qualities of this amazing breed as a landrace and as true to their origin as I can has become a passion of mine. In 2022 we were thrilled to have added some wonderful new genetics to our flock which will allow us to go forward with 3 lines, giving us the genetic diversity that is much needed in preserving this breed.
