Silverudd Blue

Silverudd Blue were created by Martin Silverudd in Sweden. At the time of his death, this breed was not finished but dedicated breeders today are working to try to follow the idea and traits of what he intended. While not a heritage breed in terms of age, they can still be considered so due to having been bred to share the same traits as other heritage breeds. They are quite a new breed to North America, with the first import brought to the U.S in 2011. Silverudds are sometimes mistakenly called Isbars.

Silverudds are small birds with a smaller straight comb, dark eyes, and slate/willow legs. Offspring from our flock will be blue, black, or splash. We started our flock from three unrelated lines, ensuring the genetic diversity that is so important for this breed.

Silverudd Blue are the only pure bred that lay green eggs! All other green egg layers are crosses of some kind. There is quite a variety of shades of green from mint to moss with some eggs being speckled.

We have genetically tested our roosters and are proud to say they are homozygous for the blue egg gene. This was something very important to us when we made the decision to breed Silverudds. This means that offspring will ALL lay green, and not tan or brown which can sometimes be the case.

Silverudds are good foragers, predator savvy, hardy in both heat and cold, and excellent layers. They are good with people but tend to mind their own business. The roosters are great flock leaders and very gentle, and hens don't often go broody. They are a fun addition to a poultry yard, both as a pure breed and as a part of a mixed flock.
