  • Can I visit your farm?
No. We follow a strict biosecurity plan that helps us to keep our birds healthy and reduce exposure to disease. This involves keeping a closed flock and limiting visitors to our farm. Keeping our flock (and yours) healthy and happy is our top priority.
  • What do you feed your birds?
Because we keep our roosters with our hens at all times, our personal choice is to feed a breeder ration custom made for us by a local organic feed mill. We supplement it with Fertrell Poultry Nutri Balancer as well as free choice grit and oyster shells. Chicks and growouts are fed a non-medicated custom organic starter or grower ration also supplemented with Poultry Nutri Balancer and appropriate sized grit.
  • Tell me about your breeding flocks?
When we started breeding (and on occasions that we added in new genetics), we carefully sourced lines that we felt would best help us work towards our goals of maintaining good breed representation and genetic diversity. All our lines that we hatch from are our own. Our breeding flock is at least one year of age and older. We do not use pullets in our breeding program and will not send you pullet eggs as hatching eggs. We always make sure to test hatch and grow out birds before offering our flocks to others. Our goals in breeding are to represent breeds as true as possible, while maintaining health and vigor, good temperaments for the backyard flock and egg color.
  • What happens when I make an order?
When you place an order, you will receive confirmation via email or text. We will give an approximate timeframe and will be in touch 1 week ahead of pickup or shipping to confirm details. Once you hear from us with your order date, please be prepared to receive your order. If you need us to work with you within a specific timeframe, we are happy to do so whenever possible…just contact us!
  • What is the payment process?
For all shipped orders (hatching eggs), payment is due when order is placed in order to hold your spot on our list. There will be a flat rate packaging fee of $10 on all shipped orders and shipping fees will be determined by address. Once payment is received, we will send you confirmation of payment and your tracking number. For orders being picked up (hatching eggs), payment is due at the time of pick up. For chick orders, a minimum 50% deposit is due prior to eggs being set with the remainder due at pick up.
  • What happens if you can’t fill my order?
We keep our hatching egg orders manageable for the size of our flocks and set extra eggs for chick orders so that we can be prepared to fill your order as planned. However, occasionally there may be factors beyond our control such as broody hens or a slowdown in laying. Please remember that we are dealing with animals that may not always be on the same schedule we are on! In this case, we would contact you and either reschedule or refund your order.
  • How do I know how many eggs/chicks to order?
The general “rule of thumb” is to expect 50/50 males and females. Of course, this is NOT guaranteed and may vary but it’s a good starting point. Therefore, we suggest ordering twice as many eggs/chicks as you want hens. When ordering hatching eggs, an average hatch rate for shipped eggs is 50%. Again, this is NOT guaranteed and can vary depending on a several factors, but is something to keep in mind when ordering shipped eggs and planning your flock. Please know that, whether ordering hatching eggs or chicks, you will end up with a portion of those being roosters. It is impossible for us to tell you what the ratio of hens/roosters will be in your hatch. It is your responsibility to make a plan for any roosters that you may have. Depending on flock size, time of year and length of our waitlist, it is possible that amounts of eggs available may vary. If you are ordering more than one dozen, there is a chance that your order may be split into different shipments. This will be discussed if necessary upon ordering.
  • Do you keep a waitlist?
We do keep a running wait/pre-order list. Orders are filled according to this list once payment is received. If we feel that we have received the maximum orders we can handle at any given time, we may mark that specific breed as sold out on our website. If a breed is not sold out, please don't hesitate to contact us at any time if you would like to add them to your farm. Any eggs available once our list is filled for the week, will be posted as available on our Facebook and Instagram pages.
  • When is your hatching season?
We do not add any supplemental light beyond regular daylight hours as we feel that it is very important for our birds to take whatever natural rest they need. As a result our hatching season typically goes from March to September or for as long as the girls are laying and fertility is where we want it. We start fertility testing once our birds are laying regularly after their winter break, which is usually February. Please note that different breeds have different laying cycles and they may not all be ready at the same time. If you choose to go on our waitlist prior to the start of the season, we will contact you once we start fertility testing to plan further.
  • How do you package your eggs?
We are very careful with our packaging and do everything we can to make sure your eggs arrive intact. Eggs are individually bubble wrapped, secured carefully between 2 egg flats and double boxed with compostable packing peanuts. We fit one dozen plus extras (always sent when available) per box. Your package will include eggs labeled by breed, a card stating your order and a list of hatching tips.
  • How do you ship?
We ship via courier using a shipping broker to give us a variety of couriers and rates to choose from in order to give you the best rates we can. Please note that we can only ship within Canada. Requesting "hold for pick up" is recommended when possible and may reduce the amount of jostling eggs receive during transport. However, we do understand that this is not always possible and in those cases, can have eggs delivered to the door.
  • How do I track my order?
Upon shipping, we will send you your tracking number. You may request delivery to your door or “hold for pick up”. Please keep an eye on your own tracking and if there are any issues at all, let us know! Please include a phone number upon placing your order in case the courier needs to reach you during delivery.
  • How do I pick up my order?
Due to biosecurity reasons, pick up of hatching eggs or chicks is done off property close to the farm in Bruce County via appointment. We do also make regular trips to Muskoka and are happy to coordinate meeting along that route as long as it fits into our planned travel schedule.
  • What incubator do you use?
While there are many great products out there, we have only ever used Brinsea and so can only comment on that by saying we have been really happy with our hatching results.
  • Do you guarantee your hatching eggs and hatch rates?
Due to factors beyond our control such as shipping and incubation practices, we cannot guarantee hatching eggs and are not responsible for them once they leave our farm. However, we do our very best to set you up for a successful hatch! We perform regular fertility checks to ensure optimal fertility when eggs leave our farm, collect eggs multiple times daily, store them carefully, and rotate them regularly. Eggs shipped will be no more than 5 days old and only the freshest eggs are sent. Hatching eggs are a gamble. Please remember you are purchasing fertile eggs, not chicks. It is assumed that anyone purchasing hatching eggs understands the risks that are involved.
  • My eggs are in the incubator, and some seem infertile?
Eggs showing no development or failing to hatch do not necessarily mean they are infertile. There are many reasons eggs may not start, or fail to hatch, such as shipping damage and incubation equipment or techniques. We do our very best to help you have a successful hatch by selecting the freshest fertile eggs and packaging with care.
  • Can I choose my hatching eggs?
No. However, if you have specific hopes for what you would like to see in your egg basket, please let us know and we will try our very best to accommodate whenever possible. Our goal is to breed for egg color, speckles, and bloom. Please note that the variation of speckles and bloom can change on a daily basis.
  • Do I need to preorder chicks?
Yes. We hatch chicks by order with extras added. If we have any extras upon hatch, we will post as available. For the sake of companionship, there is a minimum of 3 chicks per order ( these do not have to be the same breed). As we are a small farm and hatch in limited numbers, any large orders may need to be split ( however this can be discussed upon ordering).
  • Do you vaccinate? How do you raise your chicks?
Chicks are hatched monthly (dates to be announced) and these chicks are vaccinated for Mareks and ILT, as is our own flock. Vaccination is done at no extra charge. If you would prefer your chicks not vaccinated, please let us know at time of order. There will be no reduction in price for non vaccinated chicks. On the occasion that a small custom hatch is requested outside of our regular hatch dates, these chicks will not be vaccinated unless the purchaser of the chicks would like to assume an additional vaccination cost. In this case, please contact us to discuss. Our chicks are hatched and raised in a clean, isolated environment away from our adult flock.
  • Do you sell sexed chicks?
All our chicks are sold straight run, meaning unsexed. We are unable to tell you how many male/female you will get.
  • Do you offer older sexed birds?
Because we are a small farm and want to be able to maintain close relationships with all our birds, generally we just grow out birds for our own flock. We will not be taking a wait list for any grow outs or adult birds. If these become available, they will be posted on our Facebook and Instagram page. For companionship and ease of integration into your flock, we will not sell individual birds (minimum of 2).
  • Do you take back extra roosters?
No. Due to biosecurity protocols, we cannot take back any birds once they have left our farm. When hatching or purchasing chicks, remember that a percentage will be male and please have a plan in mind for any unwanted roosters.
  • Do I need to bring anything when I pick up my chicks?
No, we will provide a box for taking your chicks home and a heat pad depending on the weather.
  • What will I need at home for my chicks?
Please have all your supplies ready before you take your babies home! You will need the following: *Brooder that is an appropriate size for the number of chicks you're getting plus allow for room as they grow ( baby chicks grow quickly!). This should be inside in a well-ventilated but draft free space, away from other pets and that will keep them safely contained. *Bedding - We like puppy pads for the first few days as they are non-slip and allow the chicks to easily find food and water. After the first few days, pine shavings or pelleted straw are our preference. This should be kept clean and dry and changed regularly. *Safe heat source (brooder plates are great!). *Fresh, clean water at all times. *Chick starter (we personally prefer non-medicated) accessible at all times. If your feed is a mash type, you will need to add chick grit. Chicks will be handed over healthy and vibrant but once picked up, they are your care and responsibility.
  • When do I pick up my chicks?
We will notify you when we set eggs for your order, as well as send a reminder a week prior to hatch date. Chicks must be picked up within three days of notification of them being ready via appointment. Any chicks left after three days, without brooding arrangements made in advance, will become available to others with no refund.
